Privacy Policy

The short version
- You don’t create an account. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your study progress is saved on our server and tied to an anonymous cookie in your browser.
- No ads and no third-party trackers. We count visits with Umami, which uses no cookies and collects no personal data. We don’t sell or share your data.
- Progress that is no longer used is deleted automatically.
What we store on the server
To keep your progress between visits, our server stores, for each anonymous player:
- Game progress: XP, how many questions you answered and got right, your daily streak, your best score per chapter, badges, and flashcards reviewed.
- Practice exam history: date, score, whether you passed and how long it took.
- Your time zone (for example “America/Chicago”), so your daily streak follows your local day.
- When the progress was created and last used.
While you play, the server also keeps the round or exam in progress (which questions you were given) so answers can be checked on the server. Unfinished rounds and exams are deleted once they expire.
The cookie
On your first visit we set one cookie, dps_player: a random identifier that links this browser to your progress. It is HttpOnly (page scripts can’t read it), it contains nothing about you, and our database only keeps a one-way hash of it. It lasts 400 days and is renewed while you keep using the site. It is strictly necessary for saving progress, so there is no cookie banner and no other cookies.
Moving progress to another device
“My progress” can generate a one-time code to use the same progress on another browser. The code expires after 10 minutes, works only once, and only its hash is stored. To prevent guessing, the number of attempts to enter a code is limited per IP address; that limit is kept in memory only, and the IP address is not saved.
What stays in your browser
- The practice exam in progress (your answers so far) is kept in this tab’s session storage, so a reload doesn’t lose it. It is cleared when the exam ends or the tab is closed.
- The app can be installed and has an offline page; for that, your browser caches the site’s own files (scripts, styles, icons). No personal data is cached.
Visit statistics
To know which parts of the site are useful, we use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool. It records aggregated, anonymous statistics: pages visited, the site you came from, browser, operating system, device type and country. It uses no cookies, doesn’t store your IP address or any personal data, and can’t follow you across other sites. Your study progress and answers are not sent to it. If your browser sends “Do Not Track”, nothing is recorded.
Technical logs
Like any website, the servers that host Texas Driver Quest may keep short-lived technical logs (such as IP address, time and requested page) to keep the service secure and working. They aren’t used to identify or profile you.
How long we keep it, and how to delete it
- Your progress is kept while a browser uses it. Clearing this site’s cookies disconnects your browser from it; unlinking a device in “My progress” disconnects that device.
- A browser that hasn’t used the site for 400 days (when its cookie expires) is removed, and progress no browser uses any more is deleted 30 days later.
Children
Texas Driver Quest is a study aid for people preparing for the Texas driver license knowledge test. It is not directed to children under 13, and it doesn’t collect personal information from anyone.
Not an official DPS service
Texas Driver Quest is an unofficial study tool, not affiliated with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Nothing you do here is shared with the DPS or anyone else.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. The current version always applies.
