About the Texas knowledge test

How many questions are on the Texas permit test?

The Class C knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions on road signs and traffic laws. You need 21 correct answers (70%) to pass. The practice exam here follows the same format: 10 sign questions and 20 on traffic laws.

Where do the questions come from?

Everything is based on the Texas Driver Handbook DL-7 (revised January 2026), the official study guide published by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Every explanation cites the handbook page it comes from.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test?

You can retake it. Your driver license application stays valid for 90 days or until you fail the test three times; after that you need to pay for a new application.

Can I use this to study for another state?

No. Traffic laws, fees and license rules differ between states, and this tool only covers Texas. Use your own state's driver handbook instead.

Is this the official DPS test? Do I need an account?

It is an unofficial, free study tool, not affiliated with the Texas DPS. There is no sign-up: your progress is saved automatically for this browser, and you can move it to another device with a one-time code.
